Firefox for Android beta adds per-tab private browsing, home screen shortcuts, support for 25m more phones

853828 72144095 520x245 Firefox for Android beta adds per tab private browsing, home screen shortcuts, support for 25m more phones

Firefox 19 was released released less than a week ago, but already Mozilla has made a new Firefox for Android beta available. This new release adds per-tab private browsing, customizable home screen shortcuts, and support for 25 million more phones.

Per-tab private browsing is of course the biggest new feature. It allows you to switch between private and standard tabs within the same browsing session, meaning you don’t have to relaunch the Firefox app every time.

For those who don’t know, private browsing lets you browse the Internet without saving any information about which sites and pages you’ve visited (private browsing data does not show up in your AwesomeBar History or Awesome Screen shortcuts). Other browsers have it too, and is often referred to as “porn mode.”

Customizable shortcuts on the home screen are pretty straightforward. You can now customize the shortcut images on the home screen with your favorite or most frequently visited sites by simply tapping and holding your top sites, and then choosing “pin” from the drop-down menu.

Last but not least, Mozilla is continuing to expand its ARMv6 support. Firefox 19 added support for 15 million more phones and now this beta is adding support for yet another 25 million. This is thanks to the minimum requirements of 600MHz, 384MB, and QVGA. The following devices are now supported as a result: Samsung Galaxy Next (GT-S5570, GT-S5578), HTC Aria (S31HT), HTC Legend (A6363), Samsung Dart (SGH-T499), Samsung Galaxy Pop (SCH-i559), and Samsung Galaxy Q (SGH-T589).

Here is the full Firefox 20 beta for Android changelog:

  • NEW: Per-tab private browsing.
  • NEW: Gingerbread and Honeycomb support for H.264/AAC/MP3 hardware decoders.
  • NEW: Top Sites in about:home are now customizable.
  • CHANGED: System requirements have been lowered to 384MB of RAM and QVGA displays.
  • DEVELOPER: Continued implementation of draft ECMAScript 6 – clear() and Math.imul.
  • HTML5: now supports blend modes.
  • HTML5: Various and improvements.
  • HTML5: getUserMedia implemented for web access to the user’s camera and microphone (with user permission).
  • FIXED: hide virtual keyboard when bookmarks list is opened (808408).
  • FIXED: Tablets – home tab thumbnails may appear cut off (824483).

You can grab the latest Firefox beta from the Google Play store.

Facebook SDK for iOS 3.2 brings deeper app usage metrics, ad optimizing and error handling

Screen Shot 2013 02 25 at 1.15.54 PM 520x245 Facebook SDK for iOS 3.2 brings deeper app usage metrics, ad optimizing and error handling

Facebook has released version 3.2 of its SDK for iOS developers and it adds deeper app usage metrics, better ad optimization and enhanced error handling. The new version of the SDK comes along with a fresh version of Facebook’s iOS Dev Center as well.

The new SDK also has improved error handling support. It now supports all classes of error responses and will categorize those errors by common app handling behavior. The SDK now handles larger numbers of error cases including password changes and expired tokens.

The improved metrics include tracking of the iOS 6 native share sheet and native UI controls. This brings more access to stats that can show how people are utilizing apps built with Facebook’s SDK and enable developers to better track that behavior to tweak apps. The new metrics are included in the App Insights dashboard.

The new ad optimization features are based off of Facebook’s conversion measurement system for websites. Facebook says that a native solution for iOS apps is on the way. Conversion measurements are obviously important for ads that run inside apps and will help developers to tweak placement and content of those ads to maximize the profit that they’re seeing.

Facebook is also rolling out limited support for in-app purchase logging with some ‘select partners’.

The FBAccessTokenData type, which is new, presents token strings, permissions, expirations and more to allow you do deep link to sections of an app more effectively. It should let you open app sessions more easily from token data, helping you to provide exterior links to your app that require less fiddling and friction on behalf of the user.

The improvement of app analytics for Facebook developers on iOS is a nice improvement. Twitter recently made plays for better crash reporting in its own apps with the acquisition of Crashlytics, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see improvements in its API and iOS integration offerings that allowed easy access of error handling and testing for developers using Twitter.

This release of the SDK is mostly fleshing out Facebook’s offerings to make it a better, more complete solution for developers looking to launch apps using Facebook’s graph on iOS. Nothing earth shattering, but a nice step forward.

This Week’s App Store Editor’s Choice: Year Walk

Year Walk 4

The Apple editors have been on a side-scrolling platform kick the past few weeks. Two weeks ago, Cordy 2 won the honor of Editor’s Choice and last week, Rock Runner bounced into the spotlight in its debut week. So, it came as a bit of a surprise this week when Year Walk was awarded the Editor’s Choice title. Well, only a surprise until playing the game and actually experiencing the beauty and complexity it has to offer.

Whenever a game produces a unique and artistic theme, it always generates a lot of interest. Year Walk is full of beautifully rendered, dark and eerie images that draw the player in. However, looks are not everything and this app also has brains.

Year Walk 2

Year Walk 3

There are various puzzles to solve using images you discover throughout the environment. It is full of rich and complex riddles that are very difficult to find, and even more difficult to figure out.

The story is based on Swedish mythology and incorporates creatures like the Brook Horse and Mylings. Players enter the game from the point of view of a lovelorn individual who decides to go on a Year Walk, which is a treacherous trip that often leads to death. If the Walker makes it to the Church, he or she will see the future.

The story begins at the cabin. You are standing outside of it and must figure out where to go and what to do next. There are no instructions or tutorials to tell you how to move or what your goal is. You are isolated and alone, wandering in an unfamiliar place with no knowledge of how to get to where you want to go.

Year Walk 6

Year Walk 5

To get started, swipe from left to right. Eventually, you’ll see an arrow that either points forward or backward. Follow the arrows by swiping upward or downward. This is how you explore the forest.

You will often come across puzzles that you don’t even know are there. For example, there is a wooden doll hanging in a dark shack. You can tap and swipe on it and nothing will happen. It is only when you spin its head multiple times that something will happen.

It is highly recommended that you download the free companion app to help you understand the nuances of Year Walk a little better. There are also some useful hints hidden deep in the wording of the companion app that may help you if you get stuck.

Year Walk 1

Year Walk 7

This is somewhat of a horror story, but not like a monster attack or murder mystery. The bloody images are subtle and creep up on you with such nonchalance that you don’t even realize you are scared until you try to go to sleep.

This game is not for everyone. It unfolds very slowly. There is not one word of instruction. You can’t restart the game. There is no menu screen. When you start playing Year Walk, you are isolated and alone, just like you would be on a real one.

The dark beauty and uniquely complex puzzles make it clear that this game was meant to be Apple’s Editor’s Choice this week. It wouldn’t be surprising if it won Game of the Year for 2013.
